Photo Guide
The Secret to a Perfect Portrait Starts with the Perfect Photo
As a digital artist with 25 years of experience, I manually review every photo. Here is how to ensure your pet’s personality shines through.
Choose the Perfect Photo — It’s Easier Than You Think
You don’t need a professional camera. Most phone photos work beautifully!
We review every photo after you upload and will contact you if we need a better one — so you can order confidently.
Best photo for pet portrait, how to photograph your dog for a portrait
Choosing the right photo is the single most important step in creating a great portrait — and fortunately, it does not require a professional camera. Most of our best portraits come from phone photos.
Good photos should:
- Be taken at your pet’s eye level
- Show the entire head and ears
- Be in natural daylight (near a window or outdoors)
- Show clear fur detail
- Not be blurry
- Have your pet looking toward the camera
Even imperfect photos can often be improved. We can enhance lighting, remove backgrounds, and combine images when necessary.
This table compares different photo qualities to help you choose the best resolution for your print.
| Photo Source | Quality Level | Expected Result | Expert Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Camera/Phone | ★★★★★ (High) | Sharp, detailed, and vibrant. | Perfect for large prints. |
| Social Media Download | ★★★☆☆ (Medium) | Good, but slightly compressed. | Great for small/medium sizes. |
| Screenshots | ★☆☆☆☆ (Low) | Pixelated and "flat" details. | Not recommended (Ask Anto). |
| Old Scanned Photos | Varies | Soft, vintage look. | I can manually restore these! |
Before ordering a Dog Portrait, Cat Portrait, or Multiple Pets Portrait, we strongly recommend reviewing this guide. It increases both likeness and final print quality.
If your pet has passed away and only a few photos remain, don’t worry — we frequently work with older images for Pet Memorial Portraits.
A good photo makes a great portrait. A great portrait becomes a lifelong keepsake.

FAQ:
1. Can you work with old or blurry photos?
Yes. While high-resolution photos are always preferred, I have over 25 years of experience as a professional Photoshop artist. I can often manually restore and sharpen older or lower-quality photos of pets who have passed away. If you are unsure, please email me your photo for a free assessment before ordering.
2. Can you combine two different photos into one portrait?
Absolutely. Because I manually compose each piece of art, I can take pets from separate photos and place them together in a single, cohesive watercolor portrait. This is a great way to create a "family" portrait of pets who never met or couldn't sit still together.
3. Do I need to remove the background of my photo before sending?
No, there is no need to edit your photo. I personally handle all the digital "cutting" and background removal to ensure your pet is perfectly framed within the watercolor aesthetic. In fact, keeping the original photo helps me see the lighting more clearly!
4. What happens if my photo isn't good enough?
I review every single photo before I begin the artistic process. If I feel the photo won't produce a high-quality print, I will contact you directly to request a different one or discuss how I can use my technical background to improve the one you provided.
5. How do I send my video for the QR code?
Once you place your order, you can upload your video file directly through our secure portal or email it to us. I will then generate a custom QR code and seamlessly integrate it into your artwork so your memories can be replayed instantly with a smartphone scan.
Worried About Your Photo?
If your photo isn’t suitable, we’ll let you know before creating the artwork.
